Applications
Methyl salicylate is a colorless, sweet-minty ester produced by esterifying salicylic acid with methanol or by extracting natural wintergreen leaves; pharmacologically it acts as a counter-irritant and topical analgesic in liniments, plasters, rubs, inhalants and cold-relief balms, while its refreshing aroma lends flavor to chewing gum, lozenges, toothpaste, mouthwash, confectionery and perfumery products; industrially it serves as a specialty solvent and plasticizer for nitrocellulose, acrylics, inks, lacquers, UV coatings and as an immersion liquid in optical and spectroscopic work, as an intermediate for dyes, antifungal agents and pesticides; in agriculture it functions as a semiochemical to lure aphids, stink bugs and other pests or as a plant defense elicitor; additionally, methyl salicylate is employed as a calibration standard in chromatography, NMR and IR analysis, as a leak-detector due to its penetrating odor and in quality control of rubber and polymer goods.
