Applications
Methyl propionate (CAS 554-12-1) is a short-chain ester with a mild fruity aroma that enjoys wide industrial and laboratory use: thanks to its moderate volatility and balanced polarity it serves as a fast-drying solvent for automotive coatings, printing inks, acrylic adhesives, electronic component cleaning and natural-flavour extraction; in the flavour and fragrance sector it provides apple, pear and caramel notes to beverages, confectionery and tobacco; in organic synthesis it acts as an intermediate for manufacturing pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, plasticizers, surfactants and polyester monomers; at process scale methyl propionate is also explored as an octane-boosting bio-fuel additive, a reaction medium for anionic polymerisation and a reference compound in gas chromatography, making it a versatile, cost-effective raw material that meets increasingly stringent safety and sustainability demands.
