  • Applications

Methyl jasmonate (MeJA, CAS 1211-29-6) is widely applied as a plant defense elicitor and secondary-metabolism stimulant across agriculture, postharvest handling, biotechnology, and perfumery: preharvest sprays or vapor treatments activate JA signaling, increase proteinase inhibitors, phytoalexins, phenolics, glucosinolates, and herbivore-induced VOCs that attract natural enemies, thereby enhancing tolerance to insects, pathogens, drought, salinity, and chilling via upregulated antioxidant enzymes and osmoprotectants; in storage of produce (e.g., citrus, mango, strawberry, grape, peach) MeJA reduces fungal decay such as Botrytis, alleviates chilling injury, preserves firmness, color, aroma, and antioxidant capacity, and can modulate ripening and anthocyanin accumulation depending on species; in plant cell, tissue, or hairy-root cultures it is a classic elicitor boosting terpenoids, alkaloids, and phenylpropanoids for pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals (e.g., paclitaxel in Taxus, artemisinin in Artemisia, indole–terpene alkaloids in Catharanthus, anthocyanins and rosmarinic acid in Lamiaceae); in research it serves as a probe of jasmonate signaling and crosstalk with salicylic acid and ethylene, as an LC–MS/GC–MS analytical standard, and as a tool to induce glandular trichomes and reshape VOC profiles; additionally, owing to its jasmine-like odor, MeJA is used at low levels as a fragrance ingredient under prevailing safety guidelines.
