Applications
Longifolene (CAS 475-20-7) is a tricyclic sesquiterpene with a warm piney-woody odor obtained mainly from turpentine and select essential oils; its applications include: (1) fragrance - used directly for woody/resinous nuances and as a fixative, and widely employed as a precursor to oxidized/rearranged derivatives such as longifolenone, isolongifolene and isolongifolanone that deliver amber/woody notes; (2) synthetic intermediate - a cost-effective chiral pool building block enabling access to tricyclic frameworks like longiborneol and diverse pharma/agro scaffolds; (3) atmospheric research - a GC-MS reference and model sesquiterpene for ozonolysis/NO3 oxidation and secondary organic aerosol studies; (4) energy and materials - investigated for hydrogenation/isomerization to high-energy-density biofuel components (notably aviation) and as a feedstock for terpene-based resins/additives; (5) bioactivity - explored for antimicrobial and insect-repellent properties at research scale; its low volatility, hydrophobicity, and bio-based origin suit technical fragrance formulations and sustainable supply chains.
