Applications
L-Menthyl acetate (CAS 2623-23-6) is the natural ester of menthol prized for its smooth peppermint aroma and long-lasting cooling effect; it is used extensively as a flavour in foods and drinks (chewing gum, hard candies, chocolate, dairy products, alcoholic and soft beverages), as a top note in tobacco and e-liquid blends, as a coolant and masking agent in toothpastes, mouthwashes, lozenges, cough syrups, cold tablets, topical pharmaceuticals such as analgesic gels, plasters, anti-itch creams, nasal inhalers and antiseptic sprays, as a soothing additive in skin-care cosmetics, shampoos, shower gels, deodorants, perfumes, soaps, scented candles and pet-care products, while also serving to suppress off-odours and impart freshness in plastic packaging, household cleaners and industrial lubricants, being exploited in aromatherapy, massage formulations, and as a semi-natural intermediate for synthesising other high-value menthyl derivatives.
