  • Applications

Geosmin (CAS 19700-21-1) finds broad application as the signature earthy odorant: in drinking-water management it serves as a sensory indicator to monitor quality, trace cyanobacterial/actinomycete blooms, optimize off-flavor control (powdered/granular activated carbon, ozonation, biofiltration) and validate plant performance; in aquaculture and foods it is tracked to prevent muddy flavor in farmed fish and to mitigate earthy notes in beetroot, fermented beverages, and wine; in fragrance it is dosed at trace levels to impart “petrichor” and wet-soil facets to perfumes, candles, and aroma accords; in research it is used as an analytical reference for GC-MS/GC-O, for sensory-panel training, to study geosmin synthase and terpene biosynthesis, and as a biosignature of microbial activity in soils and controlled environments.
