Applications
gamma-Elemene (γ-elemene, CAS 30824-67-0) is a natural sesquiterpene found in zedoary/turmeric, ginger and other essential oils, used primarily in pharmaceutical and natural-products R&D as a potential antitumor scaffold: numerous in vitro and in vivo studies report antiproliferative activity, induction of apoptosis and autophagy, suppression of invasion/metastasis, chemo- and radiosensitization, and modulation of PI3K/Akt/mTOR, MAPK and NF-κB pathways; it has also been investigated for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial/antifungal and antibiofilm effects, enabling exploration in drug-delivery systems (e.g., nanocarriers), botanical pesticide leads and biopreservation; in the fragrance sector, γ-elemene contributes a warm woody–herbal note to perfumery and may occur as a natural flavor component via essential oils, and it serves as an analytical reference standard for QC and chemotaxonomic profiling of oils; importantly, clinical evidence specific to γ-elemene remains limited (distinct from β-elemene–rich preparations), so any therapeutic use is investigational and not a substitute for standard care.
