  • Applications

Ethyl salicylate (CAS 118-61-6) is a fragrant ester of salicylic acid possessing the sweet minty aroma of wintergreen oil and is widely employed as a flavoring agent in chewing gum, toothpaste, beverages and cough syrups; it acts as a fixative and scent modifier in perfumes, shampoos, soaps, deodorants and sunscreen formulations thanks to its UV-absorbing salicylate core; in pharmaceuticals it functions both as a masking excipient and as a topical analgesic-anti-inflammatory ingredient in throat sprays, muscle rubs and dermatological creams; industrially it serves as a solvent for cellulose nitrate, an intermediate in the synthesis of flavors, dyes and pesticides, a reference standard in analytical chemistry, and a natural-tasting wintergreen surrogate in botanical and laboratory studies.
