(E)-alpha-Farnesol (CAS 82010-11-5) is a sesquiterpene alcohol with a soft floral odor used widely in fragrance applications as a base note, odor modulator and fixative for perfumes and as a skin-conditioning, deodorizing scent ingredient in personal-care and oral-care products; in food and beverages it may be employed at trace levels as a flavoring to impart floral–fruity nuances where regulations permit; owing to antibacterial, antifungal and biofilm-disrupting activities it is leveraged for malodor control, skin-care and cosmeceutical research, and in oral-care solutions targeting plaque; in the life sciences it serves as a quorum-sensing molecule in Candida albicans, a standard and tool for isoprenoid biology and protein farnesylation studies, and a versatile starting material for synthesizing terpenoid derivatives, insect growth regulators, insect pheromones/attractants–repellents and integrated pest-management agents; additional uses include intermediate for pharmaceuticals, vitamins/ubiquinones and functional materials, as well as a skin emollient/penetration enhancer in select formulations, with fragrance-allergen labeling considerations depending on jurisdiction.
