Applications
Dimethyl tetrasulfide (CAS 5756-24-1) is a polysulfide organosulfur compound with a strong sulfury odor; it is used mainly at trace levels as a flavor/aroma ingredient to impart onion–garlic, cabbage, seafood and cooked‑meaty notes; as a reference/standard in GC, GC–MS and GC–SCD for sulfur‑volatile analysis and sensory studies in foods, beverages and environmental odor work; as a sulfur‑transfer reagent and polysulfide‑bridge builder in organic synthesis and materials modification (installing extended S–S linkages, thiol/disulfide transformations) and as an intermediate to prepare sulfur‑rich ligands and polysulfide additives; it also serves as a model substrate in redox, biodegradation and off‑flavor formation research, and has been explored as an alternative sulfurization agent for hydrotreating catalysts in refining, subject to technical fit and safety regulations.
