Applications
Decane (n-decane, CAS 124-18-5) is a straight-chain C10H22 hydrocarbon used as a nonpolar solvent for hydrophobic reagents, oils/waxes and polymers; as a medium for extraction and cleaning, as the oil phase in emulsions and microfluidics; as part of the n-alkane series for gas chromatography calibration and Kovats retention index assignment, including column performance and temperature-program checks; and as a model hydrocarbon in combustion research for evaporation/spray, soot formation, and reaction kinetics relevant to gasoline, kerosene, and diesel. In petroleum and environmental engineering it serves as a “model oil” for wettability, interfacial tension, and porous-media flow studies and for assessing surfactants and enhanced oil recovery processes; it is also employed as a nonpolar reaction medium in nanoparticle and materials synthesis and in thermophysical/transport-property measurements, noting it is a flammable liquid requiring good ventilation and ignition-source control.
