Applications
Choline chloride (CAS 67-48-1) is an essential nutrient often grouped with the B-complex vitamins and finds broad use: as a feed additive for poultry, swine, ruminants and aquaculture it donates methyl groups, prevents fatty liver, accelerates growth, improves egg production, feed conversion and immune response; in pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements it serves as a precursor of acetylcholine for cognitive health, a hepatoprotective agent, a prenatal nutrient and a homocysteine-lowering factor; in biotechnology it is a component of cell-culture media and a protein stabilizer; in agriculture foliar sprays of choline chloride enhance germination and stress tolerance to drought and salinity; in cosmetics it acts as a humectant and antistatic agent for hair care; additionally, this quaternary ammonium salt is a key building block for deep eutectic solvents, electrolytes, corrosion inhibitors, demulsifiers in petroleum processing, catalysts for organic synthesis and hydrometallurgical recycling, valued for its biodegradability, low toxicity and cost effectiveness.
