Applications
D-Camphor (CAS 464-49-3), the dextrorotatory isomer of camphor, is a natural bicyclic terpene with a strong aroma that is widely used in pharmaceuticals as a cooling, analgesic and decongestant ingredient in rubs, plasters and inhalants; in cosmetics, perfumes, soaps and shaving creams to impart its characteristic scent and cooling effect; in foods at trace levels as a flavoring for chewing gum and traditional sweets; in agriculture and household products as a natural insect repellent; in organic chemistry as a chiral auxiliary and precursor to camphor-10-sulfonic acid for asymmetric catalysis; and in polymer materials as a plasticizer for cellulose nitrate and a crystal-modifying additive that enhances mechanical properties and durability.
