Applications
(-)-β-Curcumene (CAS 28976-67-2) is an optically active sesquiterpene found in turmeric essential oil and other Zingiberaceae species, characterized by warm spicy, woody, slightly herbal notes; in fragrance and flavor applications it deepens turmeric–ginger, spice, and dry-wood accords and supports “natural” labeling when sourced from essential oils; in biomedical research it is investigated in vitro for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal potential, as well as selective cytotoxicity toward certain cancer cell lines (not an approved drug), with nanoemulsions or microencapsulation explored to enhance solubility and stability; in agriculture it is studied as a botanical insect repellent or behavioral modulator within integrated pest management; analytically, it serves as a GC–MS reference standard and authenticity/quality marker for turmeric oils and for profiling enantiomeric ratios in chemotaxonomy; in synthesis, its hydrophobic terpene scaffold is a convenient feedstock for oxidized fragrance intermediates; recommended handling includes storage under inert gas in amber vials at cool temperatures to minimize oxidation and aroma loss.
