  • Applications

Benzyl salicylate (CAS 118-58-1) is a versatile fragrance ester widely used in fine fragrances, cosmetics, and personal care products such as shampoos, body washes, lotions, and deodorants, as well as in household cleaners, fabric softeners, air care and candles; it imparts a sweet, floral, balsamic character (often jasmine-like), functions as a fixative to round off accords and extend longevity, and serves as a masking agent to suppress undesirable base odors; within formulations it also acts as a solvent/coupling agent to dissolve and disperse less volatile aroma chemicals and to enhance fragrance stability in surfactant systems; due to its UV-absorbing capacity, it is applied as a photostabilizer for fragrance/color and as a UV-absorbing additive in polymers, coatings, inks, and adhesives to mitigate UV-induced degradation; additionally, it is used as an intermediate for other salicylates and specialty aroma chemicals, with usage typically aligned to IFRA standards and allergen labeling requirements in many markets.
