Applications
alpha-Turmerone (CAS 82508-15-4) is a major sesquiterpenoid of turmeric essential oil with broad applications: as a flavor and fragrance ingredient imparting warm, spicy, woody notes in perfumery, personal care and foods (subject to industry/regulatory limits); as a nature-derived preservative aid due to antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal properties; in preclinical research it shows anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative and immunomodulatory activities and synergy with curcuminoids, thus used as a reference standard in pharmacognosy/phytochemistry, a tool for pharmacological screening, and a potential excipient to enhance stability/bioavailability in formulations; in agriculture and vector control, alpha-turmerone-rich preparations exhibit repellent and larvicidal effects and help protect stored commodities from pests, supporting biopesticide development; it is also employed as an analytical marker (GC-MS/LC-MS) to standardize turmeric oils and detect adulteration; note that regulatory status varies by jurisdiction and alpha-turmerone is mainly used for research, flavor/fragrance and cosmetic applications rather than as an approved drug active.
