Applications
Alpha-ocimene (CAS 6874-10-8) is a volatile monoterpene with a sweet, herbaceous, floral, citrus-green odor, used primarily as a fragrance ingredient to impart freshness, green lift and diffusion in perfumes, body mists, soaps, detergents, deodorizers and personal care products; in foods and beverages it functions at very low levels as a supporting flavor to enhance citrus and herbal notes in line with regulatory limits; in agriculture and plant science it is leveraged as a characteristic plant volatile for research on defense signaling, plant–insect interactions and development of semiochemical-based pest-management approaches; in analytical laboratories it serves as a common reference/marker for GC–MS terpene profiling of essential oils, botanicals, flavor raw materials and food matrices, and as a monoterpene scaffold for organic synthesis (e.g., Diels–Alder additions) and studies of oxidative stability, storage conditions and packaging compatibility; it also contributes to the sensory identity of many natural essential oils (basil, mint, citrus, geranium, etc.), helping formulators fine-tune accords, quality control and traceability.
