  • Applications

α-Methylbenzyl alcohol (CAS 98-85-1) is a versatile aromatic alcohol widely employed as a highly enantioselective intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis (penicillamine, antihistamines, β-blockers), as a fragrance ingredient with a delicate rosy note, as a selective solvent for Grignard reactions and polymerization processes, as a chiral transfer agent for resolving racemic mixtures, and as a precursor to styrene oxide, α-methylbenzylamine, phenacyl chloride and hydroxyacetophenone derivatives; it also serves as an alkyd-resin stabilizer, an adhesion-promoting additive for paints and printing inks, a viscosity modifier for lubricants, and an intermediate in the manufacture of agrochemicals, rubber accelerators and specialized surfactants.
