Applications
Alpha-fenchene (CAS 471-84-1) is a bicyclic monoterpene with a fresh piney, camphoraceous, slightly citrus odor, used primarily in fragrances to add bright herbal/pine facets to perfumes, soaps, detergents, candles and air-care; in flavors it may be applied at very low levels to enhance citrus–mint–herbal notes in chewing gum, beverages and savory seasonings within applicable safety limits; in aroma chemistry it serves as an intermediate for oxidation/hydrogenation to fenchone, fenchol and camphor-type derivatives, and for preparing epoxides and other terpene building blocks; in essential-oil analytics it is employed as a reference/marker for qualitative–quantitative GC-MS profiling to help authenticate raw materials; in R&D it is studied for odor properties, typical reactions (epoxidation, hydroboration, halogenation) and exploratory insecticidal/antimicrobial potential at lab scale; note it is a flammable liquid prone to autoxidation, so antioxidants, tight packaging and compliance with IFRA/food regulations are recommended.
