Applications
Acetone (CAS 67-64-1) is a highly volatile, polar organic solvent whose versatility underpins many industries: in laboratories and chemical manufacturing it is used to rinse glassware, dilute or extract sparingly soluble compounds, act as a mobile phase additive in chromatography, and prepare samples for spectroscopic analysis; in coatings, inks, adhesives and plastics it rapidly dissolves polymers such as nitrocellulose, polystyrene and acrylics, enabling viscosity control, faster drying and effective surface cleaning before painting; as a chemical intermediate it feeds large-scale syntheses of methyl methacrylate and bisphenol A, precursors to PMMA, polycarbonate and epoxy resins; in cosmetics and personal care it is the active ingredient in nail-polish removers, false-eyelash glue solvents and pre-treatment degreasers for skin prior to makeup or tattooing; in pharmaceuticals it supports active-ingredient purification, steroid recrystallization and film-coating dehydration; additionally, acetone serves as a metal-degreasing agent in mechanical workshops, a secondary refrigerant in dry-ice baths, an auxiliary fuel for lamps and a rapid-penetrating fixative for biological specimens. Because it evaporates swiftly, is highly flammable and has a characteristic odor, its storage, transport and use require strict adherence to fire safety and ventilation regulations.
