Applications
4,6,6-Trimethylbicyclo(3.1.1)hept-3-en-2-one (verbenone, CAS 80-57-9) is a monoterpene ketone with broad applications: in forestry and crop protection it is deployed as an anti-aggregation semiochemical to disrupt orientation and suppress attack by several bark beetle species (e.g., Dendroctonus, Ips), commonly in slow-release pouches or flakes as part of integrated pest management to protect conifer stands and nurseries; in fragrance and flavor it imparts resinous, piney, minty, herbaceous, camphoraceous nuances to fine fragrances, personal care, household cleaners and air care, and serves as a subtle flavor modifier at very low levels; in organic synthesis its chiral bicyclic scaffold makes it a valuable starting material/intermediate for terpenoid derivatives, lactones and camphor-like frameworks, and a model substrate in Baeyer–Villiger oxidations, asymmetric hydrogenations, epoxidations and other selective transformations; it is also used in chemical ecology and insect olfaction research, in the development of controlled-release delivery systems, and occasionally in aromatherapy as a clarifying odor note, with the caveat to follow applicable safety and labeling regulations.
