Applications
3-Hexanol (CAS 623-37-0) is a straight-chain secondary alcohol used as a solvent/co-solvent in organic synthesis and formulation work (e.g., dissolving resins, oils, and waxes and tuning evaporation in coatings, inks, and adhesives), as an intermediate to make fragrant 3-hexyl esters and ethers for fragrance, cosmetic, and flavor applications, as a reference/internal standard in GC/GC-MS and for studies of retention indices, phase equilibria, and hydrogen-bonding interactions; and, because it is chiral, as a building block for enantioenriched derivatives in asymmetric-synthesis research, as well as a practical probe in sensory evaluation and in lab-scale extraction and purification method development.
