Applications
2-Pinanol (CAS 473-54-1) is a pinane-skeleton monoterpene alcohol available from pine-derived terpene streams; it is applied as a fragrance modifier imparting pine, woody and resinous facets in perfumes, deodorants, personal care and cleaning products; as a trace flavor ingredient to add freshness and roundness in foods, beverages and confectionery; as a medium-volatility solvent/co-solvent and renewable carbon source in coatings, inks, adhesives and sealants; as a synthetic intermediate to pinane derivatives (esters, ethers, oxides and ketones) for fragrance, surfactant and plasticizer uses, and as a building block for pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediates; as an asymmetric building block in organic synthesis thanks to its rigid chiral bicyclic scaffold, enabling pinane-based ligands/auxiliaries, boronate precursors and selective transformations; and as an analytical reference, odor benchmark and a target for toxicity/bioprofiling when formulating terpene-based “green” products.
