  • Applications

2-Furanmethanol, 5-ethenyltetrahydro-alpha,alpha,5-trimethyl-, (2R,5R)-rel- (CAS 34995-77-2) is a chiral, terpene-like furanyl primary alcohol whose vinyl handle and gem-dimethyl-substituted tetrahydrofuran ring enable use as: (i) an aroma/flavor intermediate for building esters, carbonates, ethers, and acetals and for sensory studies on stereochemistry–odor relationships; (ii) a versatile synthetic building block in pharma and agro discovery, where the –CH2OH and C=C are diversified via acylation, alkylation, epoxidation, hydroboration–oxidation, and thiol–ene chemistry to generate analog libraries; (iii) a reactive monomer or diluent for UV-curable and 2K coatings/adhesives after acrylate or urethane derivatization, improving adhesion, gloss, and cure speed; (iv) a reference/analytical standard for LC/GC–MS in studies of terpene oxidation products and complex aroma matrices; (v) a hydrophobic–polar scaffold for probing enantioselective catalysis (selective oxidations, allylic transformations, photopolymerizations) and for designing specialty surfactants; (vi) a precursor to functional materials (oligomers, resins, copolymers) leveraging both the alcohol and the double bond to tune modulus, hardness, and compatibility with polyolefin or polyester systems, with actual use subject to safety assessment and applicable regulations.
