Applications
1-Heptadecene (CAS 6765-39-5) is a linear C17 alpha-olefin used as a versatile building block across chemical manufacturing: isomerization–sulfonation gives biodegradable internal olefin sulfonates for detergents and oilfield chemicals; hydroformylation followed by hydrogenation affords C18 aldehydes/alcohols for surfactants; epoxidation yields C17 epoxides for resins and plasticizers; hydrosilylation onto silanes/siloxanes produces release, water-repellent and defoaming additives; oligomerization to specialty polyalphaolefins or use as a comonomer enables tuning of lubricant viscosity, volatility and low-temperature flow; alkylation, olefin metathesis, or an ene reaction with maleic anhydride forms alkenyl succinic anhydrides for paper sizing and dispersant packages; it also serves as a precursor to C17 esters and ethoxylates used as emollients in personal care, as well as surface-treatment and coating additives.
