    Citral (CAS 5392-40-5) là hỗn hợp tự nhiên của hai đồng phân neral và geranial nổi tiếng với mùi chanh tươi sáng, được ứng dụng rộng rãi trong công nghiệp thực phẩm như chất tạo hương cho đồ uống, bánh kẹo, sữa chua và gia vị, trong lĩnh vực mỹ phẩm – nước hoa để mang lại nốt hương cam chanh thanh mát, che giấu mùi khó chịu và tăng cảm giác sạch sẽ, trong sản xuất chất tẩy rửa gia dụng, nước xịt phòng, nến thơm, tinh dầu khuếch tán để khử mùi và kháng khuẩn, đồng thời đóng vai trò nguyên liệu trung gian quan trọng để tổng hợp vitamin A, ionone, menthol và các dẫn xuất terpenoid khác trong dược phẩm, được khai thác như chất bảo quản tự nhiên, chất kháng nấm, xua côn trùng trong nông nghiệp, và còn được nghiên cứu cho các tác dụng chống viêm, chống oxy hóa, giúp thư giãn trong liệu pháp hương thơm; tuy nhiên do tính kích ứng da và mắt ở nồng độ cao, citral được quản lý bởi các quy định IFRA, FEMA, EU và yêu cầu ghi nhãn dị ứng trong thành phẩm.
