    Axit benzoic (Benzoic acid, CAS 65-85-0) là một acid thơm đơn giản có nguồn gốc tự nhiên từ nhựa cây nhưng hiện chủ yếu được tổng hợp công nghiệp; nhờ đặc tính ức chế vi sinh vật mạnh nên được ứng dụng rộng rãi: trong công nghiệp thực phẩm nó cùng muối natri hoặc kali benzoat làm chất bảo quản cho nước giải khát, nước trái cây, mứt, dưa chua, tương cà, kéo dài thời hạn sử dụng; trong dược phẩm tham gia bào chế kem chống nấm, thuốc mỡ trị bệnh da và là chất trung gian tổng hợp nhiều hoạt chất khác; trong mỹ phẩm đóng vai trò điều chỉnh pH, khử mùi nhẹ, ngăn sản phẩm hư hỏng; ngoài ra còn dùng sản xuất nhựa alkyd, tăng tốc đóng rắn epoxy, phụ gia chống ăn mòn trong chất làm mát động cơ, tiền chất thuốc nhuộm và chất hóa dẻo, đồng thời là chất chuẩn phân tích và tác nhân phản ứng quan trọng trong nghiên cứu hóa hữu cơ.
