    3,7,11-Trimethyl-1,3,6,10-dodecatetraene (thường gọi là farnesene) là sesquiterpen mạch hở giàu liên kết đôi, được ứng dụng làm thành phần hương liệu và nước hoa (tạo nốt xanh, táo, thảo mộc và gia cường các tông cam quýt, táo, lê, hoa) và làm chất điều chỉnh hương trong thực phẩm; trong tổng hợp hữu cơ, nó là khối xây isoprenoid để điều chế farnesol/farnesal và nhiều dẫn xuất sesquiterpen khác, cũng như tiền chất chế tạo nhựa terpene, tackifier, elastomer sinh học và chất trung gian cho chất hoạt động bề mặt; trong nghiên cứu, các đồng phân farnesene được dùng làm chất chuẩn/đầu dò bay hơi trong sinh thái học hóa học (tương tác cây–côn trùng), làm mô hình khảo sát cơ chế oxy hóa và độ bền hương trong không khí, và khi hydro hóa thành farnesane có thể làm nền tảng cho nhiên liệu sinh học, dầu gốc và phụ gia công nghiệp có nguồn gốc sinh học.
