4-tert-Butylcyclohexyl acetate (CAS 32210-23-4), also known by common trade names such as Vertenex, Lorysia, PTBCHA, or Woody Acetate, is a synthetic ester compound that plays a particularly important role in the fragrance industry. At room temperature, this compound exists as a clear, colorless to pale yellow, slightly oily liquid. It is a commonly used raw material to replace or enhance expensive natural extracts due to its outstanding performance and reasonable price.

This product stands out with its complex and versatile odor profile, blending the softness of woody, floral, and fruity notes (such as apple and pear), and especially the powdery characteristic of iris/orris. The scent characteristics of 4-tert-butylcyclohexyl acetate depend heavily on its spatial structure, which includes two main geometric isomers: cis and trans. The cis isomer brings an extremely refined, radiant, and sweet floral and powdery scent, which is highly favored in fine perfumery; meanwhile, the trans isomer has a drier woody scent, similar to cedarwood, and is less intense. Premium versions on the market, such as Lorysia®, are designed with a very high cis isomer content to optimize the floral effect.

One of the greatest advantages of this compound is its excellent chemical stability. It resists hydrolysis in highly alkaline environments (such as bar soaps with a pH of 8-11) and even maintains its stability in environments containing bleaching agents or oxidizers, where many other fragrance molecules are prone to decomposition or product discoloration. In addition, the product has excellent substantivity, clinging to fabrics for a long time (even after the wash cycle) and on the skin, helping to maintain a fresh, clean feeling like "fresh laundry" for an extended period.

Thanks to its pleasant scent and high stability, 4-tert-butylcyclohexyl acetate is extremely widely applied in both fine perfumery and personal and home care products. It acts as a blender and volume enhancer, perfectly bridging floral, woody, and fruity notes. This ingredient is used in formulations for perfumes, lotions, shampoos, deodorants, soaps, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, and air fresheners. Furthermore, it is also extremely useful in masking unpleasant base odors such as tobacco, onion, and garlic in deodorizing products.

Regarding health and environmental safety, 4-tert-butylcyclohexyl acetate is evaluated to have low acute oral and dermal toxicity and is not a primary skin irritant for humans. However, it is classified as a skin sensitizer (causing allergic skin reactions upon contact) and is toxic to aquatic life. When used in manufacturing processes, it is necessary to comply with the formulation limits of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) and be equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment such as protective gloves and eye/face protection, as well as store the chemical in tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, avoiding heat and strong oxidizing agents.
