Ambrether (also known by trade names and synonyms such as Kephalis, Woody Cyclohexanone, or 4-(1-ethoxyvinyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethylcyclohexanone) with the CAS number 36306-87-3, is a highly important and favored synthetic fragrance ingredient in the perfumery and cosmetic industries. It is a clear liquid that ranges from colorless to pale yellow, which is highly soluble in alcohol and various organic solvents but practically insoluble in water.
The odor profile of Ambrether is incredibly rich and complex, serving as a solid heart and base note. Its most prominent characteristic is a warm woody and rich amber scent, delicately blended with nuances of dry tobacco and hot herbs. Upon deeper evaluation, users can detect facets of old wood, leather, suede, a slight honey-like sweetness, and a gentle powdery floral undertone reminiscent of muguet and violet. With impressive substantivity, Ambrether boasts a longevity of 80 to 100 hours on a smelling strip, helping to create depth, smoothness, and enhanced diffusion for the entire fragrance composition.
In formulation, Ambrether demonstrates excellent blending and synergistic capabilities with a wide range of other raw materials. It harmonizes perfectly with floral notes (such as rose, jasmine, violet, and lavender), spicy groups, and particularly shines when combined with Iso E Super, patchouli, sandalwood, or tobacco extracts. Furthermore, Ambrether (Kephalis) is a crucial building block in the synthetic reconstruction of complex aromas like agarwood (oud) and ambergris.
Thanks to this versatility, the applications of Ambrether are highly diverse. This compound is a "pillar" in many high-end perfume formulas, especially for men's and unisex fragrances with Oriental, woody, or leather profiles. Additionally, Ambrether is widely used to impart a luxurious and lasting scent to personal care products (such as shampoos, shower gels, lotions, and soaps) and home care products (like fabric softeners, scented candles, and detergents).
Regarding stability and safety, Ambrether performs exceptionally well in neutral and weakly alkaline environments (such as alcohol-based fine fragrances, scented candles, and bar soaps), as well as in fabric softeners. However, it can undergo degradation and lose its olfactory quality if used in highly acidic products with a pH below 3. Ambrether fully complies with IFRA (International Fragrance Association) safety standards, having no maximum concentration limits for use in finished products (including fine fragrances), and it contains no allergens restricted by the European Union Cosmetics Regulation. Nevertheless, in its pure concentrated form, this material is classified as a mild skin and eye irritant, and it is toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects, meaning it requires proper storage and handling.
