  • Applications

(Z)-alpha-Bisabolene is a sesquiterpene hydrocarbon from essential oils, used primarily as a fragrance ingredient in fine fragrances, personal care, and home-care products (providing warm, woody, slightly citrus facets; acting as a modifier, blender, and soft fixative), as a flavoring at very low levels in foods and beverages; as a chemical intermediate to prepare derivatives such as bisabolone, bisabolene epoxides, and other functionalized sesquiterpenes; as a renewable platform molecule in industrial biotechnology (microbially produced and hydrogenated to bisabolane, a candidate bio-diesel/jet fuel); and as a reference marker in essential-oil analytics and studies of in vitro bioactivity (e.g., antimicrobial/antioxidant) and plant chemical ecology; in formulations it can enhance odor longevity, improve accord compatibility, and help mask base notes, subject to applicable safety and use-level regulations.
