Applications
Tributyrin (CAS 60-01-5) is the triglyceride of butyric acid and finds versatile applications: in the food industry it serves as a natural buttery flavour enhancer and mouthfeel improver for cheese, bakery, confectionery, instant coffee and dairy-type aromas; in animal nutrition it provides a protected source of butyrate that promotes growth, strengthens intestinal mucosa and modulates immunity in poultry, piglets and aquaculture; in medicine it is being explored as a butyrate pro-drug for treating inflammatory bowel disease, lipid metabolism disorders and colorectal cancer as well as for epithelial regeneration; additionally, tributyrin is a standard substrate for measuring lipase activity in microbiological assays and enzymology, and it acts as a safe solvent and phase-transfer agent in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations because of its excellent biocompatibility.
