Applications
Tributyltin chloride (CAS 1461-22-9) is primarily used as an organotin reagent and building block in chemical synthesis. In industry, it is employed as a precursor to tributyltin-based catalysts and stabilizers for polymer processing, including PVC stabilization and polyurethane formation, and as a tin-transfer reagent for preparing organotin species used in cross-coupling reactions (notably Stille-type couplings). It also serves as a starting material for synthesizing other organotin compounds that find use in coatings and adhesives, and, in some historical marine coating formulations, as a precursor to tributyltin biocides for antifouling paints. Overall, tributyltin chloride is treated as an intermediate or starting material under appropriate safety and regulatory controls.
