Tolualdehyde (isomeric mixture; CAS 1334-78-7) is a versatile aromatic aldehyde used primarily as a synthetic intermediate across fine-chemical and industrial applications: it forms Schiff bases/imines with amines, undergoes aldol and Knoevenagel condensations to build benzylidene frameworks, participates in reductive amination to give tolylalkylamines, adds to Grignard reagents to afford secondary alcohols, and can be selectively oxidized to the corresponding o-, m-, or p-toluic acids used in resins, coatings, and polyester chain regulation; from these transformations its derivatives feed into pharmaceuticals (building blocks for APIs and intermediates), agrochemicals (precursors to tolyl-containing actives), dyes and optical brighteners, UV stabilizers, functional polymer additives/monomers, and fragrance/flavor compositions when a warm, sweet aldehydic note is desired; the mixed-isomer grade is chosen when cost or throughput outweighs isomeric purity, whereas individual o-/m-/p-isomers are selected for odor or activity specificity.
