Applications
Titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) is widely used as a key precursor in several large-scale industrial processes: it feeds the chloride process for producing titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigments used in coatings, plastics, and paper; it serves as the starting material for the Kroll process to produce metallic titanium; it functions as a precursor in Ziegler–Natta catalyst systems for olefin polymerization, enabling the production of plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene; it acts as a strong Lewis acid catalyst for selected organic transformations (e.g., Friedel–Crafts-type reactions); and it is employed as a chemical precursor in chemical vapor deposition or related methods to deposit titanium-containing films (e.g., TiN, TiC) for electronics and protective coatings.
