Applications
Thujopsene (CAS 470-70-2) is a woody, cedar-like sesquiterpene hydrocarbon used mainly as a fragrance ingredient in fine fragrances and personal-care products (soaps, shampoos, deodorants, aftershaves) as well as in candles, air-care and cleaning formulations to build and modulate dry, resinous woody notes; as a major natural constituent of cedarwood oils it serves as a marker in GC/MS profiling for authenticity/origin and for quality standardization of essential oils, and as an analytical reference in studies of VOC emissions from cedar wood; in chemical and bioscience R&D it is employed to probe sesquiterpene biosynthesis (cyclase pathways), to generate oxidized derivatives for odor design, and to investigate bioactivities such as insect repellency, termiticidal and antifungal/antibacterial effects in vitro that help explain cedar’s natural durability; in practical applications it appears in cedarwood-oil-based repellents/biocidal wood treatments and other bio-based materials, subject to IFRA and local biocide regulations, with attention to purity control, flammability, and safe handling.
