Applications
Sulfuric acid (CAS 7664-93-9) is a central industrial chemical with widespread applications: production of phosphate fertilizers and processing phosphate rock to phosphoric acid and phosphates; as an acid catalyst and dehydrating agent in petroleum refining and in esterification and sulfonation processes, supporting manufacture of detergents, surfactants, and specialty chemicals; electrolyte in lead-acid batteries; metal surface treatment including pickling and descaling of steel and other metals; used as a sulfonating agent or catalyst in the production of detergents and dyes; and cleaning and surface preparation in electronics manufacturing (for example piranha-type cleaning solutions).
