Applications
Stannic chloride (CAS 7646-78-8) is used as a strong Lewis acid catalyst for esterification and transesterification in organic synthesis; it also serves as a catalyst in certain polymerization and polycondensation processes to produce specialty polymers. It is a precursor for the synthesis of organotin compounds and tin-based catalysts used in industrial applications. When converted to tin oxide (SnO2), it serves as a precursor for tin oxide coatings and thin films used in electronics, optics, and surface protection. In analytical chemistry, it can be used as a reagent for complexation and sample preparation in various analytical techniques involving tin-containing species, depending on formulation and regulatory requirements.
