Applications
Sodium thiocyanate (CAS 540-72-7) finds practical use as a source of thiocyanate (SCN−) in organic synthesis, enabling introduction of the thiocyanate group and serving as a precursor to thiourea derivatives, dithiocarbamates, and related compounds used in pharmaceutical and agrochemical applications. In analytical chemistry it is routinely used to furnish SCN− for iron(III)–thiocyanate colorimetric tests, producing the characteristic blood-red complex for metal determination. In hydrometallurgy and mining, sodium thiocyanate is studied as a leaching agent to dissolve gold and copper in cyanide-free processes. It also serves as a building block for polymer and coating chemistries involving thiocyanate functionalities and can act as a ligand in coordination chemistry and catalysis.
