    Sodium periodate (NaIO4) is a strong oxidant widely used in organic synthesis and carbohydrate chemistry to oxidize vicinal diols to aldehydes and related products. In industrial manufacturing, it serves as an oxidant in synthetic routes and material processing. In the polymers/plastics sector, it oxidizes cellulose or starch to dialdehyde intermediates for crosslinking or functionalization of polymer matrices. In coatings/inks and adhesives, it provides aldehyde groups that form crosslinks with polyamines or hydrazides, improving film strength and adhesion. In pharmaceuticals, NaIO4 is used as an oxidant for intermediates and steps in drug synthesis.
