Sodium oxide (CAS 1313-59-3) is a reactive alkali oxide used mainly as a flux and source of alkali in high-temperature processes. In the glass and ceramics industries it acts as a flux to lower melting temperatures and improve melt flow in soda–lime glasses and ceramic glazes/frits. It is a raw material for producing sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and other sodium salts via hydrolysis or reaction with CO2. It is also employed in enamel formulations and ceramic/metal coatings as a frit component to develop durable alkali-containing coatings. As an intermediate, it is used to synthesize sodium-containing chemicals and as a feedstock to balance alkali content in oxide melts and high-temperature processing.
