Applications
Potassium sodium tartrate tetrahydrate (CAS 6381-59-5), commonly known as Rochelle salt, is used as a complexing agent in analytical chemistry, notably to stabilize copper(II) in Fehling’s and Benedict-type reagents for qualitative sugar testing. It has historical value as a piezoelectric crystal material used in early microphones and frequency-determining devices. In metal finishing and electroplating, the tartrate anion acts as a complexing/stabilizing agent to maintain copper ions in solution in plating baths and related formulations. It can function as a buffering or stabilizing salt in laboratory formulations and may be used as a chelating agent in some cleaning formulations, depending on formulation constraints.
