Applications
Pogostol (CAS 21698-41-9) is a natural sesquiterpene alcohol from patchouli oil, used mainly in fragrance and cosmetic applications as a warm woody, balsamic note and as a fixative/odor stabilizer in fine fragrances, soaps, detergents, and personal care products; in research and quality control it serves as an analytical reference standard for GC-MS profiling, authenticity testing, and adulteration detection of patchouli oil, and as a reference material for extraction and processing development; in dermocosmetic and biochemical research it has been investigated for antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro and in preclinical models, enabling its use as a natural preservative booster in certain “natural” formulations and as a building block for semisynthesis of fragrance derivatives; additionally, due to its distinctive scent and biocompatibility, it is employed in aromatherapy, air-care products, and studies on plant-based insect-repellent formulations, with all commercial uses subject to applicable safety assessments and regulatory limits.
