Applications
Platinum (CAS 7440-06-4) is widely used across industrial and high-precision applications. In petrochemical processing, Pt-based catalysts enable reforming, hydrogenation, and hydrocracking steps that convert feedstocks into fuels and chemicals. In automotive exhaust systems, platinum is a key component of catalytic converters to reduce emissions. In electronics and electrical engineering, platinum is employed for corrosion-resistant contacts, thick-film sensors, electrodes, and specialized plating. In energy and electrochemistry, Pt catalysts power fuel cells and other electrochemical devices. In high-temperature glass and ceramics production, platinum and Pt-Rh alloys are used for crucibles, resistance heating elements, and other components that withstand extreme temperatures. Finally, platinum serves as a precursor for platinum-based pharmaceutical agents, with chemistry used to synthesize certain anticancer drugs under appropriate regulations and formulations.
