Applications
(-)-Pinocampheol is an enantiomerically defined bicyclic monoterpene alcohol occurring in certain essential oils (e.g., hyssop and conifer resins), used primarily as a reference/internal standard for GC–MS and chiral GC to quantify, authenticate, and detect adulteration of monoterpene-rich essential oils; as a starting material in aroma chemistry to prepare esters/derivatives with camphoraceous–pine facets and to explore structure–odor relationships; as a chiral-pool building block for asymmetric synthesis and for screening stereoselective catalysts/enzymes, and as a model substrate in biochemical studies (re-oxidation to pinocamphone, isomerization to isopinocampheol, biocatalytic conversions); and as a sensory standard/QC marker supporting the development and quality control of flavors, fragrances, and scented consumer products.
