Applications
p-Menth-1-ene (CAS 5502-88-5) is a naturally derived monoterpene hydrocarbon used primarily in fragrances—providing citrusy, herbal, and terpenic top notes for perfumes, personal care, detergents, candles, and air-care products—and in foods and beverages as a low-level flavoring or flavor modulator; it also serves as a bio-based, “green” solvent and diluent replacing aromatic/petrochemical solvents in coatings, inks, adhesives, and industrial degreasers and as a carrier for oils, waxes, and natural resins due to its good solvency, pleasant odor, and biodegradability, as well as an adjuvant in agrochemical formulations to improve wetting and active delivery; in organic and aroma-chemical synthesis, p-menth-1-ene functions as an intermediate to oxygenated monoterpene derivatives (alcohols, epoxides, ketones, etc.) and p-menthane frameworks via reactions such as epoxidation, hydroformylation, controlled oxidation, or hydrogenation, enabling the manufacture of flavor/fragrance ingredients, functional additives, and materials; it is also employed as an analytical reference and model substrate in catalysis/kinetics studies, and can be sourced from essential oils (e.g., citrus, turpentine) or prepared by partial hydrogenation/isomerization of limonene, with use subject to applicable safety and environmental regulations.
