Applications
Nonyltrichlorosilane (CAS 5283-67-0) is primarily used as a silane coupling agent to modify surfaces and improve adhesion between polymers and inorganic substrates such as glass, metal, or silica, via hydrolysis and condensation to form siloxane bonds with the nonyl organic group. It also serves as an intermediate for the synthesis of organosilicon compounds, including siloxanes and silicone resins, and for systems of plastics and coatings. It is a precursor for hydrophobic, nonyl-containing surface coatings and sealants. It can be used to functionalize polymer and plastic surfaces to tailor surface energy and compatibility. In coatings, inks, and adhesives, it acts as an adhesion-promoting crosslinker and aids siloxane network formation, enhancing film integrity and moisture resistance. Finally, it is a starting material for silsesquioxanes and related siloxane networks used in coatings and silicone elastomers.
