Muscone (muskone, CAS 541-91-3) is a macrocyclic ketone with a characteristic musk odor used broadly in: 1) fragrance compounding as a natural‑type musk note, fixative and softener that extends longevity on skin and fabric and rounds floral, woody and amber accords, remaining stable in soaps, detergents and air care, often delivered via microencapsulation for laundry; 2) an ethical, sustainable substitute for animal musk across the aroma industry; 3) cosmetics and personal care (creams, shampoos, deodorants) as a fragrance and masking ingredient with generally low sensitization potential and better biodegradability than nitro or polycyclic musks, used within IFRA category limits; 4) traditional‑medicine and pharmaceutical research as a surrogate/marker for musk in TCM‑type formulations and in preclinical studies of anti‑inflammatory, neuro‑ and cardioprotective activity and as a permeation enhancer; 5) olfaction and analytical science as an odorant standard, a GC–MS reference and a probe for human olfactory receptors.
