Applications
Magnesium Oxide (CAS 1317-74-4) is used as a high-temperature refractory material for industrial furnaces and process equipment, including steelmaking, cement, and ceramics; it serves as a component of magnesia cements and refractory linings. In ceramics and glass manufacture, MgO acts as a stabilizer and heat-resistant filler to improve thermal performance. In agriculture, MgO provides a magnesium source for soils and is used to adjust pH in acidic soils. It functions as a desiccant in packaging and as a drying agent. In water treatment, MgO is employed to neutralize acidity and adjust the pH of acidic effluents. In plastics and rubbers, MgO is used as a stabilizer and a flame retardant additive. It can also act as a support or base catalyst in industrial chemical syntheses. Subject to local regulations and formulation limits.
