Applications
Magnesium methoxide (CAS 27428-49-5) is a metal alkoxide used as a catalyst and initiator in a range of polymerization and transesterification processes, such as polyester synthesis and ester modification in plastics. Due to the properties of metal alkoxides, it is also employed as a precursor in sol-gel processing to produce MgO-containing coatings, films, and functional materials for coatings and industrial ceramics. It also serves as a starting material for magnesium-based catalysts and complexes used in organic synthesis and transformation chemistry. When subjected to heat, magnesium methoxide can decompose to MgO, providing a source material for refractory ceramics and dielectric components used in electronics.
